# HVLS Fans for Livestock Farms

Heat stress cuts feed conversion, milk yield and laying rates - and stagnant humid air is where ammonia and respiratory disease concentrate. RDF **HVLS fans for livestock farms** mix a barn from roof to floor at 55-90 rpm with an **IP64 sealed, gearless motor** and corrosion-resistant anodised blades, moving 4,522-15,197 m3/min on under 1.3 kW.

## Why projects specify this RDF HVLS fan

- **IP64 motor, no oil, no maintenance visits** in a dusty, corrosive atmosphere - there is no gearbox breather to clog and no oil to contaminate.
- **Ammonia and moisture management.** Gentle whole-barn movement breaks up the humid boundary layer over bedding and litter, helping tunnel-ventilation and ridge-extraction systems.
- **Heat-stress relief without a chilling draught.** The broad low-speed column avoids the sharp jets of barrel fans that stress young animals.
- **Anodised Al-Mg blades and 45# steel hub** tolerate wash-down environments; the motor has a separate protection-grade test report.
- **Winter destratification.** Low-speed operation recovers roof heat and keeps bedding drier without over-ventilating in cold months.

Airflow at maximum speed per the manufacturer type test; running speed is infinitely variable. The 5.2 m model's printed "14 ft" in the source brochure is a brochure typo; the manufacturer's Chinese-market spec table lists 5.2 m = 17 ft, the correct conversion.

## Barn layout notes

In open cattle barns and dairy free-stall housing, 6.2-7.2 m fans on 32-40 m spacing cover resting and feeding areas continuously; in poultry houses the 4.2-5.2 m models at lower mounting suit narrower roof spans and zone with the tunnel fans. The vector controller supports temperature-linked speed settings so airflow follows the heat-stress curve automatically group and linkage control are optional for export orders.

Fans install with the same anti-drop hub and safety cable used in occupied public buildings - important in buildings inspected for animal-welfare and insurance purposes.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does the IP64 motor survive a farm environment?

IP64 means protection against harmful dust deposits and water splashes from any direction; with the gearless (breather-free) design it is the configuration chosen for dusty, high-ammonia atmospheres. The IP-rating test report is on file.

### Won't big fans blow bedding and feed around?

Not at the recommended mounting and speed. The HVLS principle delivers a wide, slow column that spreads horizontally at floor level - distinctly different from the narrow high-speed jet of a barrel fan.

### How does it work with tunnel ventilation?

HVLS fans do not replace tunnel fans; they homogenise the air the tunnel system moves, eliminating still hot pockets under the ridge and over pens, improving effective cooling across the full house width.

### What about winter?

At minimum speed the fan gently destratifies warm roof air, keeps litter drier and reduces condensation without the cold-air exchange of full ventilation - a documented benefit for respiratory health and feed conversion.

## FAQ

### What does HVLS mean?

High Volume, Low Speed: large-diameter ceiling fans that move a very large air volume at low rotational speed, covering big floor areas with gentle, even airflow instead of concentrated high-speed blasts.

### Why choose a PMSM direct-drive HVLS fan?

Permanent-magnet synchronous motors with direct drive run at high efficiency with fewer wearing parts than geared designs - meaning lower energy use, quieter operation and less maintenance over the fan's life.

### Which sites use HVLS ceiling fans?

Typical applications include factories, warehouses, gyms and sports halls, markets and malls, playgrounds and sports fields, and livestock farms - any large space where uniform airflow and lower energy cost matter.

### How is fan size and unit count decided?

Selection comes from floor area, mounting height and the obstruction layout of the site; suppliers model diameter and placement from drawings so airflow reaches working zones evenly.
