# PMSM Servo HVLS Ceiling Fan

This page documents the technology at the centre of every RDF HVLS fan: the **permanent-magnet synchronous servo motor with direct drive**. There is no gearbox, oil bath or belt - the six-blade rotor is the motor rotor. The result: very high drive efficiency, zero routine drivetrain maintenance and sound below 39 dB(A) across the 3.6-7.2 m range.

## Why projects specify this RDF HVLS fan

- **Gearless, brushless, sealed.** The PMSM rotor carries the blade hub directly; the IP64 housing keeps dust and moisture out of a stator with a patent-protected cooling structure.
- **Servo-grade vector control.** Closed-loop vector drive with IPD soft start removes the inrush and mechanical shock of direct-on-line motors; RFI filtering and overload protection are built in.
- **Independent conformity assessment.** The permanent-magnet motor (model DLM 0320) was assessed by an independent laboratory against EMC 2014/30/EU (EN 61000-6 series) and LVD 2014/35/EU (EN 60204-1:2018).
- **Low speed, high torque.** Servo control holds 55-90 rpm steadily even as blade load changes with door cycles or seasonal air density - the key to the gentle, non-turbulent HVLS breeze.
- **No maintenance calendar.** No gear oil, brushes or belts. The controller logs faults for planned servicing rather than breakdown response.
- **Patent portfolio.** Motor, rotor, stator cooling, multi-protection fan control and the IoT controller are covered by the manufacturer's Chinese utility patents.

Airflow at maximum speed per the manufacturer type test; running speed is infinitely variable. The 5.2 m model's printed "14 ft" in the source brochure is a brochure typo; the manufacturer's Chinese-market spec table lists 5.2 m = 17 ft, the correct conversion.

## What direct drive changes in practice

Conventional HVLS fans use a geared motor: the gearbox multiplies torque but contains oil, seals and bearings that need periodic attention several metres above the floor - often above production lines or stored goods. Eliminating the gearbox removes both the maintenance-access problem and the most common failure mode.

The trade-off is a motor that must deliver high torque at very low speed, which is exactly what a PMSM servo does well. Combined with the vector controller's soft start, the fan reaches set speed smoothly, with none of the start-up sway typical of induction-motor HVLS units.

## Frequently asked questions

### What does PMSM mean and why does it matter?

Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Motor. Rotor magnets remove the energised rotor windings of ordinary induction motors, cutting rotor losses; synchronous servo control holds speed exactly. In an HVLS fan that means lower kWh, no gearbox and silent, sway-free rotation.

### Is the motor certified for export markets?

The DLM-series PMSM motor holds Certifications of Conformity to EU EMC 2014/30/EU and LVD 2014/35/EU (2020, independent laboratory). The complete 7.2 m fan additionally has Chinese type-test reports at 220 V and 380 V. Documents ship with orders.

### What happens if the controller trips?

The controller protects motor and drive against overload, phase loss and over-temperature, showing a fault code rather than damaging hardware. Once the cause (usually supply or obstruction) is cleared, the fan restarts with soft start. Replacement controllers are plug-and-play.

### Does it work with speed controls or BMS?

It ships with its own variable-speed controller; scheduled, group and building-automation control can be quoted via the IoT option BMS gateway availability and protocol details for export projects are confirmed at quotation stage.

## FAQ

### What does HVLS mean?

High Volume, Low Speed: large-diameter ceiling fans that move a very large air volume at low rotational speed, covering big floor areas with gentle, even airflow instead of concentrated high-speed blasts.

### Why choose a PMSM direct-drive HVLS fan?

Permanent-magnet synchronous motors with direct drive run at high efficiency with fewer wearing parts than geared designs - meaning lower energy use, quieter operation and less maintenance over the fan's life.

### Which sites use HVLS ceiling fans?

Typical applications include factories, warehouses, gyms and sports halls, markets and malls, playgrounds and sports fields, and livestock farms - any large space where uniform airflow and lower energy cost matter.

### How is fan size and unit count decided?

Selection comes from floor area, mounting height and the obstruction layout of the site; suppliers model diameter and placement from drawings so airflow reaches working zones evenly.
